Appbrew

Deeply customizable native apps for DTC brands

Appbrew is a no-code app builder that turns a Shopify store into native iOS and Android apps, built in React Native. It's a managed, done-for-you model aimed at established Shopify and Shopify Plus DTC brands: you configure the content, and Appbrew builds and submits the apps. The company is New York based and launched the product in 2022.

Merchants assemble app content in Appbrew Studio, a CMS of drag-and-drop blocks (banners, product grids, collections, custom landing pages) with real-time preview and sync. Its differentiator is depth: metafield-based product and collection blocks and custom PDP and PLP templates, and on the top tier, source code access with GitHub connect.

Appbrew is Shopify-only. It installs as a Shopify sales channel, so catalog and customers sync automatically, and checkout runs in a web view of your Shopify or a third-party checkout. A large part of the pitch is AI: Milo, a growth assistant for merchants, and Concierge, an in-app shopping assistant for customers.

How apps are built

Appbrew's build model is managed rather than fully self-serve. You configure app content in Appbrew Studio, a CMS of content blocks with a drag-and-drop editor, real-time preview and real-time Shopify sync. Beyond the standard blocks, Appbrew leans on metafield-based product and collection blocks and custom PDP and PLP templates, which is the basis of its deep-customization positioning; the Enterprise tier adds custom app design and code access with GitHub connect.

Onboarding requires you to create and share access to several accounts: Apple Developer, Google Play, Firebase for push, and a Facebook developer app. Appbrew then builds and submits the apps under your own developer accounts and handles ongoing updates as part of the managed service, so you keep the store listings.

How it connects to your store

Appbrew installs as a Shopify sales channel. Products and collections have to be enabled for the Appbrew channel to appear in the app, and once they are, catalog, inventory and customers sync automatically. Metafields and metaobjects are supported for content, and Shopify Markets and multi-currency are available on the higher tier.

Checkout runs in a web view. Appbrew's own docs state the checkout view can display Shopify's native checkout or a third-party checkout such as GoKwik or Fastrr. Because checkout is a web view, Appbrew notes it has limited control over checkout load speed, and with a third-party checkout, discounts, loyalty and international-order fallbacks are configured in that provider's dashboard rather than in Appbrew.

Features and AI

Appbrew is feature-heavy on merchandising and retention. It includes an app-only promotions engine (amount off, buy X get Y, free gift, bundles), native video shopping and shoppable reels, loyalty and referrals, in-app subscription management through Recharge, Prive and Stay AI, and returns and order tracking. Push notifications are unlimited, delivered through Firebase, with abandoned-cart, back-in-stock, welcome and order-tracking types, scheduling and event-based automation.

AI runs through the product. Milo is a merchant-facing growth assistant that the vendor describes as setting up campaigns, segments and push in natural language, while Concierge is an in-app shopping assistant for customers, alongside AI personalization and an AI size chart. Appbrew markets 100+ integrations across reviews, loyalty, subscriptions, search, attribution and video, configured inside Studio, with premium connectors gated to Enterprise.

What it costs and who it's for

Appbrew is priced at the premium end. The Pro plan starts at $499/month with additional usage-based charges tied to app performance, and includes the native app, unlimited push, Milo, the CMS, promotions and standard integrations, with a 14-day free trial. Enterprise is quote-based, for Shopify Plus, and adds custom design, metafield blocks, subscriptions, A/B testing, multi-currency, code access and premium integrations.

It fits established Shopify and Shopify Plus brands that want a heavily customized native app and a managed build, and that can absorb a higher, partly usage-based cost. There is no self-serve free plan; onboarding is sales-led.
